July Diary

On 22 July we celebrate the feast of St Mary Magdalene: she is the Mary who was the first to see the risen Lord on Easter morning. There is some disagreement as to whether she is the same person who was forgiven by Jesus after confessing to a rather active private life, or indeed the same Mary who was the sister of Lazarus, who was raised from the dead by Jesus. This uncertainty has been exploited by writers of novels and musicals, with the result that Mary has been portrayed as a prostitute, or even as Jesus' "wife". There is of course no evidence for any of this in the New Testament, what we do know is that Jesus had delivered Mary from some sort of mental or physical anguish and as a result she followed him to his death and beyond. It was she who ran to tell the disciples that she had seen the Lord risen again - so maybe she was the first Christian!
